It sounds so romantic: retire, buy an RV and explore the world. Freedom, happiness. But for American Marie L. Mangin and her husband, that dream quickly turned into a financial and logistical nightmare. Their wise lesson? “Don’t buy that thing.”

The impulsive purchase

Marie had been dreaming of “epic road trips” for years after retirement. When they saw a ’90s compact camper on display at an auto show that fit within their budget, they thought it was destiny. They bought it on the spot. With a generator and a kitchenette, it seemed like the perfect travel companion.

But appearances can be deceiving. The first night of testing in a cousin’s driveway was already a disaster. “It felt cramped and we slept badly,” Marie tells Business Insider. They thought it was habituation, but the real misery didn’t begin until they went to a four-day festival.

The camper turned out to be way too small for two adults and their luggage. A cooler, grill, chairs and bags littered the floor. “We constantly had to move stuff outside to move around, and drag it back inside when we left so it wouldn’t get stolen,” Marie complains.

It was physical torture. Although Marie is only 1.52 meters, she constantly bumped her head on the cabinets. Her 1.83-meter husband couldn’t stand up straight at all. “The time we spent inside was just uncomfortable,” she said

Hidden defects and costs

In addition, it turned out that the seller had not been completely honest. The generator was broken, the microwave did nothing and maintenance costs skyrocketed with every mile they drove. Add in insurance and storage, and the dream became a bottomless pit.

After months of frustration and tinkering, they threw in the towel. They sold the van to a couple who were “much smaller than us.” Fortunately, they got their investment back, but the lesson was hard.

Just by car

Their new plan? Just hit the road by passenger car and sleep in cheap motels with free breakfast. “We don’t need an RV for road trips,” Marie concludes. It will save them thousands of dollars in maintenance and a lot of headaches.

So do you also dream of such a free life in a van? Think twice before breaking your savings on an old wreck. Before you know it, you’ll be moving stuff around all day and banging your head against the ceiling.
