'Max Verstappen is de beste coureur ter wereld'

Sinds de overwinning van Max Verstappen in Oostenrijk is hij de man waar iedereen het over heeft. Christian Horner trekt het overigens verder dan Oostenrijk: volgens de Red Bull-teambaas is Verstappen sinds zijn verprutste Grand Prix in Monaco 2018 bezig aan een onafgebroken rij met topraces als beste coureur ter wereld: "As the driver in the form of his life, arguably over the past 12 months, he's been the best driver in the world." Horner heeft daar ook een onderbouwing bij gegeven: "How do I substantiate that? He's not in the best car. But when you look at the results he's got out of that car since Montreal last year, some of the performances he's put in, he's made virtually zero mistakes in that period."

Horner houdt daarna niet op met het uitdelen van pluimen voor Verstappen. De Britse teambaas denkt dat Max voornamelijk is gegroeid toen hij -als gevolg van het vertrek van Daniel Ricciardo- echt de eerste rijder werd. "Daniel is such a big character, with a big sense of humour. And Max always outside of the car came a little bit within Daniel's shadow and was the jokey younger brother." Dat probleem is nu weg, want Max is de onbetwiste leider van het Red Bull Formule 1-team: "Since Daniel has left, Max has assumed the role of the senior driver within the team and the responsibility that goes with that. There's a different level of maturity, of direction and sense of purpose with him. That has really rounded the package with him."

Over een vertrek van Verstappen naar Mercedes lijkt Christian Horner zich geen zorgen te maken. Voor de Formule 1 is het immers ook beter als de twee grootheden niet bij elkaar in het team zit, maar dat ze elkaars absolute concurrenten zijn: "Max is very much the coming man. Wouldn't it be fantastic for the sport to see those guys [Max and Lewis] go head-to-head?" Hij voegt eraan toe dat ze hem zeker willen behouden en er hard aan werken om een winnende auto te bouwen: "Max is a big asset for us and we’ve got to deliver him a car that he can compete for the world championship with."
