Aston Martin Valkyrie's V12 is een 11.000+ tpm techfeestje

In een tijd waarin volop geëlektrificeerd wordt, herinneren Aston Martin en Cosworth ons nog eens aan hoe wonderschoon de al 130 jaar oude verbrandingsmotor kan zijn. Prachtig en peperduur vakwerk na de breek.

De Aston Martin Valkyrie belooft - evenals de Mercedes AMG One - de ultieme hypercar te worden, maar beide auto's bewandelen een ander pad. In het geval van de Valkyrie is gekozen voor een ultieme V12, atmosferisch en dus zonder turbolag, terwijl een hybridesysteem de gaten in het lage toerenbereik opvult. Het door Cosworth ontwikkelde 6,5 liter grote exemplaar heeft een waanzinnig laag gewicht van 206 kg. Dit laat zich in verhouding niet helemaal eerlijk terugrekenen naar een 2 liter viercilinder, aangezien de V12 niet drie keer dikkere cilinderwanden heeft, en er ook meer lucht in zit, maar het is wel erg licht. Ter vergelijking: de meesterlijke 6.0 V12 die BMW voor de McLaren F1 bouwde, woog 265 kg (inclusief uitlaat).

Dan de vermogenscijfers: de Valkyrie levert 757 kW/1.014 pk @ 10.500 tpm en 740 Nm @ 7.000 tpm. Het maximale toerental is 11.100 tpm. De motor is - evenals in bijvoorbeeld de Ferrari F50 een integraal onderdeel van het chassis, zonder motor is er niets dat de voor- en achterwielen met elkaar verbindt.

In een tijd van recycling en zuinig omgaan met je materialen, bewandelt de Valkyrie opnieuw de omgekeerde weg. Zo wordt de krukas gevormd uit een grote ronde metalen staaf, waar 80 procent van het materiaal van weggesneden wordt. Kost je wat staal, maar dan heb je wel een 50 procent lichter exemplaar dan in de (7,3 liter grote) One-77. De krukas is aan de F1-spec zuigers verbonden via titanium drijfstangen. Hoe lang alle internals het houden tot een revisie noodzakelijk is, vertelt Aston Martin niet, maar dit is ook niet zo relevant, aangezien geen eigenaar echt kilometers op zijn klok gaat zetten. Dat is het trieste lot van de meest ingenieuze staaltjes autodesign.

Enfin, het duurt nog even tot de Valkyrie er daadwerkelijk is, kijkt u tot die tijd even naar onderstaande mooie platen. Aston Martin bouwt 175 stuks (waarvan 150 met straattoelating), de prijs per stuk bedraagt zo'n €3 miljoen (£2,5 miljoen), en elk exemplaar is al vergeven.
