De beste Nürburgring-onboardvideo komt uit de vorige eeuw

Wat maakt onderstaande video zo mooi? Is het omdat hij uit een tijd komt (1996!) waarin er nog geen Go Pro's waren, en je je Ringronde lekker korrelig in 4:3 moest filmen met een joekel van een camera? Is het de input van de passagier, die zich gedraagt als een kind met rabiës dat net aan het suikerinfuus heeft gelegen? Of is het gewoon de retro-feel, met een bestuurder die met zijn jaren '90-snor net wat authentieker overkomt als alle professionele gepolijste video's van tegenwoordig, waarin je alleen maar tegen een helm en enkele overlay-tellers zit te kijken? Misschien is het van alles een beetje.

Een stukje achtergrond: achter het stuur van de (gehuurde) E34 M5 zit Dan Tackett, een man met een groot BMW-hart (en dito collectie) en iemand die duidelijk de weg kent op de Nordschleife. Voor wie het zich afvraagt: zo ziet hij er tegenwoordig uit. Op de passagiersstoel zit Mike Herman, afkomstig uit New Jersey, en dus per definitie een schreeuwer. Herman wordt he-le-maal gek als Tackett zijn zescilinder tot het uiterste drijft, en drie Porsche 911's passeert. Hierbij deert het hem niet dat de Porscherijders overduidelijk mensen zijn die bij elkaar horen en nog niet heel veel ervaring hebben op de 'Ring. Het wat respectloze commentaar (Porsche shitboxes!) schrijven we maar toe aan zijn enthousiasme.

De video oefent op ondergetekende het Goodfellas-effect uit: elke keer dat hij langskomt kan je niet stoppen met kijken. Mocht u hem nog niet kennen, dan weet u wat te doen. 

Voor de liefhebber nog een stukje context, dat we vonden op northloop.co.uk: "Mitch had planned his first visit to Germany in 1996 with another friend and consulted me for ideas. The friend cancelled at the last minute after Mitch had already reserved hotels and a Porsche 911 Turbo for a week, so Mitch invited me to join him. I accepted. The hired 911 Turbo was inoperable when we arrived, so the company graciously offered us a 911 cabrio AND a BMW M5 3.8L, which we happily accepted. 

Once at the ‘Ring for tourist laps, we did some lead-follow laps and switched cars several times to introduce Mitch to the ‘Ring. As a “Coach” for the School at that time, I was keen to make an instructional video of the Nordschleife in the most powerful car I'd had on the track at that point. I pleaded with Mitch to keep quiet, against his natural inclination, so I could narrate the tape. The video you have should have one complete lap with narration as I drove (one glaring mistake: I said Breidscheid when we were at Bergwerk—the stress of driving and narrating simultaneously!). The lap that amuses you occurred when we came upon three 911s that were obviously together and broke into their little train. 

Instead of staying back with his friends, the leader took off and gave us a challenge. It was a lot of fun for me behind the wheel, but Mitch was rather more vocal about his enthusiasm. Also on the tape is in-car video of Mitch doing a 360 degree spin before Metzgefeld, missing the Armco by mere inches. Maybe you have that too. My original is on VHS tape; someone else digitized it and put it on the internet. I am proud of the narrated lap and amused (now) by the lap following the Porsches."
