Daniël Ricciardo: 'crash op Baku was schuld van Max Verstappen en Red Bull'

Tijdens de Grand Prix van Azerbeidzjan van vorig jaar crashte Daniel Ricciardo vol in de achterkant van Max Verstappen. Hierdoor lagen beide Red Bull-coureurs in één keer uit de race. Toen werd het gezien als risico van het vak, zeker aangezien Red Bull van mening was dat hun coureurs ook tegen elkaar mochten racen. Maar Daniel Ricciardo kijkt daar toch anders op terug.

In een interview met The Sydney Morning Herald laat de Australiër weten dat hij zich niet prettig voelde bij de gang van zaken na afloop van het ongeluk. Het speelde uiteindelijk ook een rol in zijn besluit om over te stappen naar Renault. "I struggled to let that go, the whole race and the aftermath. That played a part in my decision. I never really felt the same after that. As soon as I crashed into him, part of me felt, 'you guys deserved this, that was a shitshow'."

Red Bull heeft altijd de filosofie gehad om hun coureurs gelijk te behandelen, ongeacht welke van de twee beter is. en dat gebeurde ook na de crash, maar toch voelde Daniel dat het niet helemaal lekker zat. Niet bij hem, maar ook niet bij het team. "The team treated us as both equally at fault in that situation, where I think deep down they knew that it was their mistake and Max's mistake. A lot of things didn't sit well."

"If the roles were reversed, if I'd been in front and moved twice in the braking area and he'd run up the back of me, would things have been handled the same way? It was a question I kept coming back to." Na het ongeval gingen de twee coureurs prima met elkaar om, maar toch had Ricciardo het gevoel dat hij harder moest werken voor de erkenning van het team dan Verstappen dat hoefde te doen. "I felt like I had to work too hard to justify what I wanted, and what the performances I've had say I should be worth. Perhaps the love just wasn't there."

Al met al begint het er dus toch steeds meer op te lijken dat Max Verstappen wel de reden is geweest dat Ricciardo naar Renault overstapte. Wellicht heeft hij zelfs de handdoek al in de ring gegooid, en ziet hij zichzelf nooit meer een wereldtitel winnen. Precies zoals een reaguurder op Racefans erg scherp opmerkte: 

"If you watch the Nextflix series you get a good insight into how fragile the mind of these drivers are. It majorly effects their performance. I personally think Ricciardo gave up this season and fell into the head games spiral. It does show he is likely not championship material, he gave up already. What he should have done is a Rosberg “No more mr. Nice Guy”, stayed at Red Bull and taken the fight to Max. THAT would have career making, with a one year contract and options at the end of 2019. Now it feels he took the weaker way out and is still complaining.

Just think about Rosberg vs. Hamilton. Rosberg didn't stop for no reason, its that mentally demanding!"
