Felipe Massa gaat weer racen

Eind vorig jaar hing Massa zijn helm op en stopte met de Formule 1, maar de 37-jarige coureur kruipt toch weer achter het stuur. Hij heeft een driejarig contract getekend bij Formule E-team Venturi en zal vanaf het eind van deze maand beginnen met het testen in de nieuwe VFE 05 Gen2 auto.

Massa liet voor zijn vertrek uit de Formule 1 al een beetje doorschemeren dat hij wel interesse had in een stoeltje bij een van de Formule E-teams: "For some years now, I’ve been clear about my interest in this innovative, forward-looking discipline that’s developing exponentially. I especially like the format of race meetings, the city-centre circuits and the contact with the fans. I can’t wait to take part in testing at the end of the month," vertelde de coureur aan Motorsport.

Venturi staat op dit moment zevende in het klassement en kan de ervaring van Felipe erg goed gebruiken. Volgens Venturi-baas Gildo Pastor gaat het hele team extreem veel profiteren van de nieuwe aanwinst: "I needed him, his experience, his speed, and his openness. Formula E is extremely complex to set up and drive. Even more so than in other disciplines, teamwork between the driver and the engineering team is one of the keys to success. Felipe’s 15 years’ [racing] experience in Formula 1 will definitely give us a boost. And with his humble nature, I know he will listen to the team and master the discipline quickly."
