Alonso: we zijn even snel als Haas en Renault

McLaren introduceerde een flink aantal upgrades voor de GP van Spanje. Hoewel deze niet veel uit leken te maken tijdens de race - Alonso eindigde 40 seconden achter Haas-coureur Kevin Magnussen en drie seconden achter Sainz in z'n Renault - denkt de tweevoudig wereldkampioen toch dat de auto nu snel genoeg is om the best of the rest te kunnen zijn. Het gat op Mercedes, Ferrari en Red Bull blijft volgens hem te groot.

Aan Motorsport vertelt Alonso: "We did a good step. We were eight tenths behind Renault in Baku, nine tenths behind in China, but [in Spain] we were the same in qualifying and in the race. I think we caught up with Renault and probably with Haas as well, but the top three teams are still developing the cars at the same rate we do and unfortunately we've kept that gap."

Tijdens de race in Spanje kwam de auto niet helemaal tot zijn recht. Alonso moest eerst Grosjean's crash ontwijken waardoor hij terugviel naar de 11de positie. Vervolgens zat hij een halve race vast achter de langzamere Leclerc in z'n Sauber. Daarom was Fernando evengoed erg blij met zijn behaalde achtste positie. 

"Obviously we had a plan: starting with the supersoft tyre we knew that we had to overtake people in the first couple of laps and then stop early. Unfortunately we found that we lost positions in the first couple of corners because of the incidents, so at one point I thought that points were impossible. But we did a good race, a good strategy with only one stop and it's five consecutive races in the points."
