'Honda is nu in staat de aanval op Mercedes te openen'

Het antwoord op de laatste vraag is 'ja', wanneer je het Pierre Gasly vraagt. Op de vraag hoe ver Honda chter Mercedes ligt antwoordde hij in Monaco: "Not too far. At the moment, Ferrari clearly stands out in terms of straightline speed. The one we need to target, Mercedes, is sort of more or less in the middle". 

Dit klinkt wellicht als de slager die zijn eigen vlees keurt, en dat is het ook wel een beetje, maar laten we niet vergeten dat Gasly vorig jaar voor Toro Rosso reed en dus vergelijkingsmateriaal heeft. "Performance wise we have quite a lot more than we had last year. Reliability, things run pretty smoothly since the beginning of the season for us, so honestly everything is improved.

"For sure, there's still quite a step especially compared to Ferrari that are clearly the fastest down the straight, but we know they keep pushing and more performance will come also from the engine."

De tijd zal leren of Gasly Red Bulls nieuwe motorpartner overschat of niet. Monaco is in ieder geval niet echt een benchmark, als uitzonderlijk circuit. In Canada echter zullen we zien hoe dicht Red Bull in Mercedes' versnellingsbak kan kruipen. Het meeste werk dat is te verzetten is tijdens de kwalificatie. Zei daar iemand 'party mode'??
