'Max Verstappen won dankzij Renault'

Red Bull Racing en positieve uitlatingen over motorenleverancier Renault lijken niet samen te gaan. Het Formule 1-team heeft enorm veel problemen gehad met het Franse motorblok, dus heel vreemd is het niet. Het lijkt dan ook voor het eerst dat Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner wat vriendelijke woorden over de krachtbron en zijn makers liet vallen. Hij denkt dat Renault voor het eerst sinds tijden iets goeds heeft afgeleverd waardoor Max Verstappen de winst kon pakken in Mexico.

"Renault have provided us with an engine this weekend in these conditions that is competitive with our opponents. That's enabled us to go head-to-head, lock out the front row of the grid and win the grand prix in a dominant fashion. Theoretically we should have had a one-two here. The altitude of this circuit does constrain some of our rivals and it puts Renault into a window where they are competitive. Which is why we put an awful lot of focus into this race in taking the penalties to get another B-Spec into the pool, to have for this weekend," aldus Horner tegen Autosport.

Topadviseur Helmut Marko liet niets over Renault vallen, maar denkt dat de winst van afgelopen weekend vooral aan het eigen team te danken was. Volgens de Oostenrijker had het team deze keer alles precies goed ingecalculeerd. Zelfs de extra stop van Verstappen was eigenlijk alleen voor de veiligheid. 

Over de uitval van Daniel Ricciardo waren beide heren teleurgesteld. Volgens hen is het vooral jammer dat er geen 1-2 gescoord kon worden. Nu richt het team zich vooral op het isoleren van het probleem waarmee de Australiër tien ronden voor het einde uitviel. Horner: "It looks like a clutch issue that looking at the data probably started around lap six. It looks similar to the issue Max had on Friday. They need to quarantine it all and get it back to the UK to understand, but that's what is looking like the culprit."
