Rolls-Royce Spectre wordt meest luxe EV ter wereld

Terwijl het moederbedrijf nog openlijk twijfelt over de toekomst neemt BMW's luxedivisie vol trots het voortouw in de elektrische revolutie. Met de Spectre geeft Rolls-Royce de voorzet voor een volledig elektrisch modellenaanbod vanaf - je raadt het al - 2030.

Volgens CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös is de aankondiging de meest significante sinds 4 mei 1904, toen Charles Rolls en Sir Henry Royce het eens werden over het doel om de beste auto ter wereld te maken.

Eigen platform

In tegenstelling tot wagens als de BMW iX3 en i4 wordt de Spectre niet zomaar en haastige omgebouwde benzineauto. De super-EV staat volgens Müller-Ötvös op een eigen spaceframe, dat binnenkort al getest gaat worden op de openbare weg. Pas na 2.5 miljoen testkilometers - een simulatie van 400 gebruiksjaren - zal het model op de markt komen.

Pure stilte

Rolls-Royce is een van de weinige merken waar een elektrische aandrijflijn perfect bij past. Al sinds het prille begin proberen de Britten hun wagen zo soepel en geruisloos mogelijk te maken. In het verleden lukte dat bijzonder goed met de V8 en de V12, maar elke verbrandingsmotor valt wat betreft trillingsvrijheid en pure stilte in het niet bij elektromotoren.

C-rijbewijs?

Het enige grote probleem voor de Spectre is het gewicht. Zelfs de 'kleine' Wraith legt al 2,4 ton op de schaal. Met een vergelijkbaar elektrisch model loopt Rolls-Royce het risico de drie ton grens te doorbreken, om nog maar te zwijgen over de elektrische opvolgers van de Phantom en Cullinan.

De grotere modellen zouden - net als de nieuwe GMC Hummer EV - zomaar buiten het maximumgewicht voor personenwagens kunnen vallen. De steenrijke potentiële kopers hebben gelukkig nog even om hun chauffeurs om te scholen: de Spectre wordt pas in het laatste kwartaal van 2023 verwacht.
